Marie’s costume:

Marie is not going to be the final girl she needs to be established as the victim opposed to Stacey who will be the final girl. Marie is going to a party and we have put a shot of an alcohol bottle in one shot this establishes that she is not innocent because of this I feel we need to dress her in clothes that suggest this without being to over the top.

As we want to represent the teenagers to be good, although Marie is slightly more rebellious we don’t want to establish the teenagers in our film as rebellious. Due to this we decided although it is a party we do not want to dress Marie in clothes that make her look promiscuous,  a red coat to go over the top of Marie’s clothing looks casual and realistic as she will be walking to the party. The colour red also indicates blood, romance and femininity which we want to be a sharp contrast to Stacey who will be wearing white to connote her pureness.

Leggings are common clothing staple for many teenagers and they also are quite glamorous, these make Marie look confident as this type of clothing is tight but also she doesn’t look over the top against her peers.  

      

A black vest top is also a staple in any teenager’s wardrobe, it is dark so it suggests Marie is slightly dark that she has a dark streak, it also connotes death as this is the colour that people were at funerals traditionally. The vest top is also revealing of the shoulders which suggests Marie’s need for attention as she want people to notice her. This top matches her leggings and will look like she is going out rather than just staying in.

High heeled shoes are common in party clothing, they are slightly promiscuous and will connote that Marie is slightly more rebellious than her peers.

We are not yet sure if we are going to include what Stacey is wearing, if there is no shot of her outfit we have decided that she will type to Marie a description of her outfit e.g. a white dress. If we do decide on including a shot we are going to have her dressed in an outfit like this:

This white dress is floaty and white; white suggests purity which is what we want for Stacey as she will be the final girl and conventionally the final girl will be virginal and innocent.

Blue denim jeans are a common item for any teenage boy, we do not want to make the boyfriend appears suspicious as we want to rule him out as a suspect immediately but still have an element of did he have do it? Involved.

This t shirt is similar to one we are going to use as it is generic of a male’s casual clothing and is also young and fashionable so it will suit our character of Marie’s boyfriend; the t-shirt suggests a sort of rebellious party boy he suits Marie as it is suggestive of her rebellious nature also.

These trainers are generic and a standard item of footwear for trainers this doesn’t suggest that the person wearing them is sporty as many teenagers do still wear these as a fashion item.

This is the killer’s watch that will signify him and can bring in other characters as suspects of the killing. The killer will wear this watch however many characters will also have this watch as it is popular amongst young people and doesn’t look to out of place against general clothing.

This dark black cloak is vital in masking the villains identity it also puts the audience on edge and it makes them feel insecure as not knowing who they are looking at creates an enigma.  A cloak is stereotypical of vampires and villains such as the grim reaper which signifies death; Dracula (1939) is an example of a horror film which uses a cloak.

Location shots
for the filming of our horror opening, we decided on shooting our footage in a house. This links very well with the conventions of teen horrors, where characters are often killed in their own homes. An example of this in actual media products is the film scream, where Casey (Drew Barrymore) gets killed in her own home in the film’s opening.

A laptop links to the idea of a teen horror, as many teenagers own laptops for activities such as social networking. The laptop also can suggest a fear of current technology like in the film Scream, where most characters die after some form of recent technology is present. For our horror, we are playing on the fear of the internet, as it is far more modern than mobile phones. This allows the audience in our film to associate with the fear in more of a personal way.

the bathroom is where we are planning to shoot most of our footage. Much like the bedroom, it is an area of the home where people feel most comfortable. For one of our characters to be attacked and murdered in her own bathroom allows the audience to relate to the invasion of a safe place, further adding to the fear of the scene.

This shot foreshadows the drowning of our character Marie which happens towards the end of our footage. The aim is to have this shot tell the audience that something to do with water is going to happen and its going to be something negative. However, it doesn’t say when this will happen, adding further suspense to the footage. 

As stated by our plot synopsis, it turns out the character of Stacy

 is insane, and the films events have taken place inside her mind. Using lots of shots that involve mirrors and reflections, we are going to try to use them to represent 2 worlds; reality and the world inside of Stacy’s head. We also plan to put in a shot of Marie putting mascara on. This interaction with her eyes could represent that people’s perceptions are fake, and everything the characters in our footage isn't actually real.

Using a shot of the shower railing could be used as subtle foreshadowing to later events in our footage ends with Marie drowning in her bath. It could also be a slight reference to Alfred hitchcocks film psycho, as their lead character also dies in the bathroom.

A shot focusing on the loft could be very effective as it represents the unknown. It also represents things above the character literally and figuratively, as the killer in Maries house is smarter and stronger than her. Like the basement, lofts are areas where things hide or go wrong.

Because we decided on a broad opening that could lead into any type of sub-genre the rest of the film is going to be a psychological slasher based around water, the killer will have a signifier to do with water on each death. The final girl will actually be insane and will have witnessed a death as a child this is what leads her to be in the hospital. To establish that she is in a insane asylum after or whilst each killing is happening an item is in the background which is significant of a hospital e.g. a hospital band, hand sanitiser, medical certificate, room number or a doctors plaque because of this new idea of a item being in the background. The first death in the opening will have to have an item left Jonjo put the idea forward that we should have a room number on the bathroom so this is Stacey’s number in the hospital. 

After first killing a series of deaths happen all witnessed by Stacey and all having an element of hospital and water. 
She tries to find the killer this gives a factor of thriller. 
The opening has blood left in the bath and a signifier of the room number on the bathroom door. 
The killer will carve a number into each 4 of his victims these eventually add up to the room number that was the same on the bathroom and is the number of the room that Stacey is staying in. 
The film will end with Stacey reading a newspaper of the killings, showing her the numbers carved into the bodies to create her room number, making her realize that the world she inhabits is all in her head. This is followed by a shot Stacey in a mental hospital flashbacking to the clues e.g. the plaque, the hospital band etc.

Props for the delugeThankfully, all of the props we need for ‘the deluge’ are all household items. We will need a knife for the killer to use; this can be taken from the kitchen, preventing us having to buy one. We also need various types of makeup and a bag for one of our scenes. These can be supplied by holly, one of our group members. Apart than these, we don’t need any other props.

Possible locations
woods: aim for a Blair witch project style, with a shaky cam and much of the fear left to the viewers own interpretation
school: would be easy to do, as we could film during lessons, but might have to be done after school times due to other students
graveyard: would be scary and creepy, but would be hard to get to.
house: easiest choice, and it allows for lots of different scenarios
garage: to limited in scope, but would be something different to the usual horror settings
river: would go with the theme of death by water (if we use it), but presents safety hazards and a lack of scenarios to film
things are scarier in locations people feel comfortable in, like their own home, school, hospital etc
shooting styleshaky cam? We might use a Blair witch project style, with no tripod shots. (We later learned marks were awarded for steady shots, so we abandoned this idea)
tripod shots? With tracking shots? Short sharp cuts to make events seem tenser and more exhilarating. This could add to the scares. False scares could add tension. Need to be done right.
Themea theme is needed. Amnesia? Insane? Based around drugs or drink?
Rules broken by the victim. Drinks, does drugs, smokes etc, this leads to their death. Iconography would be good to help tell a convincing story. The killer could leave a mark or item at the death scene, it could add suspense and mystery to the story.
Genre?Apocalyptic? Would need too many extras (for zombies etc) and no location for filming would fit the genre (wrong art direction etc)
teen? It was to be teen, but it can focus on other subgenres too, this is probably a good idea, as it gives us more potential to try lots of different ideas.
Slasher? The easiest to do, but would need fake blood, could be awkward and messy. The killer would have to be interesting, something that would be hard to do in 2 minutes.
Psychological? Could work well, use of what isn't seen to be scary. Would be easier to pull off in our 2 minute opening
fear of technology we could use phone calls like scream, or we could use computers and use social networking, playing on modern technology just like scream did.

DVD covers: we planned to have a horror film laying in one of our shots in our horror opening. We decided to use the film ‘mirrors’. Unfortunately the shot in which the DVD was in got cut from our footage, as it proved to be unnecessary.

Costumes: as the killer in our footage has his identity kept secret, we decided that he would wear a cloak. Not only does this add mystery to our footage, it also allows us to reference the film ‘scream’, where the killer also wore a cloak similar to ours.

Props: In our original ideas, the killer would take a knife from the main characters (Marie) kitchen and use it to kill her later on. This would be a reference to scream, which also features a knife block that is interacted with by characters in the opening scene. It is only a minor reference to scream, as ghostface doesn’t kill Casey with her own kitchen knife.

laptop wallpaper: we originally planned to have a horror film as the background of maries laptop. The image we were going to have was of Casey from scream encountering ghosface.

However, we chose to go against this, as used an image of a waterfall instead. We used this to foreshadow later events which would happen to Marie.
 Name references: we have named our character Marie. We have done this as it is similar to Marion crane, one of the characters in the film ‘psycho’ who also gets killed of relatively early.

For the 2 minute opening of our horror film, we have decided to not have any dialogue, so we don’t have a script. This was decided upon for various reasons. The main reason was the fact that our opening only has 2 characters, the killer and the victim. The only interaction between them is the murder towards the end of the footage, where no dialogue is spoken, just screams. Secondly, due to having broad Norfolk accents, dialogue would take some of the fear out of the scene, as Norfolk accents are very comical.

Originally we intended for the main character, Marie to have a brief phone call to her boyfriend saying “hey, I'm just getting ready, okay see you then bye”. We then changed this to a text message to avoid unnecessary dialogue.

After we settled upon the title of ‘the deluge’ for our horror film, we decided we needed a suitable font to represent the tone our opening was trying to take. Due to the death of a character in a bath, water was a constant theme throughout the film, with many others dying from being drowned as well. We needed a font that would fit well with this constant theme. I decided to use the sites 1001fonts.com and dafont.com to find suitable fonts. After I've found some suitable designs I intend to alter them in Photoshop to tweak them to a design that would be perfect for our project.

Font 1: children should not play with dead things
This font is particularly effective at fitting with the theme of our horror opening, as it appears to have some sort of liquid dripping from the words. The rounded edges and uneven shapes can be linked to water itself, making this font a good choice for our project

Font 2: plasma drip
plasma drip would make a good font type to use for our horror opening. Its bubbly edges represent flowing water very well and fits with the theme of our film. Much like the previous font ‘ children should not play with dead things’, this font also has water dripping off of the letters, further tying in with the theme of water.

Font 3: raptor kill
the font of raptor kill is both a good and bad font to use for our film opening. It successfully signifies water by having it drip from the letters. But on the other hand the letters aren’t defined and are quite hard to read. This is a problem due to the title ‘the deluge’ being odd, and it’s essential that people know what it is. This is one of the fonts I would consider choosing for the title of our horror opening.

Font 4:DuerTWOo

To achieve the desired effect on this font design I wrote out tHE DeLuGe, instead of ‘the deluge’. I did this because it gave a far better effect, and made the font look far more ominous and chilling. The fonts main style looks a lot like its in the style of watercolour brushstrokes, which fits in very well with the theme of our horror film.

Font 5: dink

While this font doesn’t really represent water in any way, It does signify insanity very well. It achieves this by having larges cracks throughout the E letters. This would be fitting for the general plot of the our film, but would be a bad representation of our opening, which has very little to do with insanity, only water
